Ambient flow velocity and resulting clearance rates of the terebellid polychaete Lanice conchilega (Pallas, 1766) ArchiMer
Denis, L; Desroy, Nicolas; Ropert, Michel.
A laboratory flume study was conducted to determine the effect of flow velocity on clearance rates of the Polychaeta Terebellidea Lanice conchilega (Pallas, 1966). Using sets of 75 individuals collected along the east coast of the English Channel, we measured clearance rates at five flow velocities of approximate to 4, 9, 15, 22 and 27 cm s(-1) with a culture of the diatom Chaetoceros calcitrans as food source. During each control (without polychaetes) or clearance (with Lanice conchilega) experiment, in vivo fluorescence was continuously monitored. Further HPLC analysis confirmed the sediment resuspension for the highest flow velocities tested, indicating the need for 'corrections' from control experiments. The global pattern resulted in a dome-shaped...

CAULLERIELLA PETERSENAE N. SP. AND TWO NEW RECORDS OF CIRRATULIDAE (ANNELIDA: POLYCHAETA) FROM VENEZUELA Boletín de Investigaciones
Díaz-Díaz,Oscar; Cárdenas-Oliva,Adibe; Liñero-Arana,Ildefonso.
A total of 295 specimens of cirratulids were collected at five localities from the northeastern coast of Venezuela. Caulleriella petersenae is described as a species new to science, which is characterized by the absence of eyes and the presence of the first notopodial hooks at the chaetiger 26. On the other hand, Monticellina cf. serratiseta and Timarete caribous were recorded for the first time from Venezuela waters. All these species have been found associated to macro-algae and coral reef.

Comparaison de méthodes d'évaluation de la production secondaire d'une population de l'annélide polychète Ditrupa arietina (O.F. Muller) ArchiMer
Medernach, L; Gremare, A.
We compared the ability of three direct methods (increment summation, loss summation and instantaneous growth rate coefficient), the size-frequency method, and eight indirect methods (Banse and Mosher, Benke, Brey, Edgar, Morin and Bourassa, Plante and Downing, Robertson and Schwinghamer et al.) to measure or to predict the secondary production of a Mediterranean population of the polychaete Ditrupa arietina. This comparison was carried out both on the 1994 cohort during its two-year lifespan and on the entire population during the two years of the study (1994-1996). Our results showed that all three direct methods are more or less equivalent. Results referring to the year 1994-1995 showed a strong overestimation of the actual production by the size...

Experimental study of filtration activity in Ditrupa arietina (Annelida Polychaeta) using an automated image analysis system ArchiMer
Duchene, Jean Claude; Jordana, Esther; Charles, François; Gremare, Antoine; Amouroux, Jean Michel.
An automated image analysis system designed to assess the activity of benthic organisms is described. This system is used to study filtration in the serpulid polychaete Ditrupa arietina. The video sensor of the system is composed of a black and white charged coupled device, a microprocessor, a memory and an interface board. It is driven by real-time routines, which are downloaded in permanent memory prior to each experiment. These routines control picture acquisition frequency and compute the differences in grey levels between the image recorded at a given time and a reference image (corresponding to no filtration in the case of D. arietina). These differences are used to detect numerical objects, which are stored in the memory board. At the end of each...

Patagonichnus: a new trace fossil from the Miocene of Patagonia. A probable fodinichnion of gregarious polychaetes Ameghiniana
Olivero,Eduardo B.; López Cabrera,María I..
Miocene tidal deposits from Las Grutas, Patagonia, Argentina, superbly preserve cylindrically laminated burrow systems including Asterosoma radiciforme von Otto and three compound ichnospecies of the newly proposed ichnogenus Patagonichnus ; P. calyciformis n. isp.; P. stratiformis n. isp.; and P . thalassiformis n. isp. Together with large, palmate burrows, probably produced by crustacean decapods, they are elite trace fossils. The Patagonichnus burrow systems consist of many distinctive concentrically laminated elementary components including: horizontal and vertical, conical and helicoidal bulbs and swellings; vertical shafts; straight and paired branches; and cone-in-cone structures. Hollow, branched, straight or helicoidal inner lined tubes connect...

Polychaetes from a southwestern shallow shelf Atlantic area (Argentina, 38 S) affected by sewage discharge RChHN
ELÍAS,RODOLFO; BREMEC,CLAUDIA S; VALLARINO,EDUARDO A..
A benthos-sampling program was carried out in the coastal area of Mar del Plata city in order to know the composition and distribution of infaunal polychaetes living on a subtidal soft-bottom substrate affected by the sewage discharge. Sandy bottoms showed heterogeneous sediment composition and very low organic matter content. Thirty three polychaete species were identified in a range depth between 6.5 to 12.5 m. A comparison with data from 30 years ago from adjacent areas deeper than 12 m is herein presented. Polychaete distribution was related both to the type of sediment and to the content of organic matter. Owenia fusiformis Delle Chiaje was dominant and peaked at stations near the sewage effluent. Small-sized polychaetes were abundant in the sampling...

Reinstatement of Euarche rudipalpa (Polychaeta: Acoetidae), with remarks on morphology and body pigmentation Rev. Bras. Zool.
Salazar-Vallejo,Sergio I.; Rizzo,Alexandra E.; Fukuda,Marcelo V..
Eupanthalis rudipalpa Amaral & Nonato, 1984 was described based on three incomplete, colorless specimens and has not been reported since its original description; the epithet rudipalpa means "hirsute palps", a characteristic that separates it from other congeneric species. Eupanthalis McIntosh, 1876 and Euarche Ehlers, 1887, and their respective type species, E. kinbergi McIntosh, 1876 and E. tubifex Ehlers, 1887, were considered synonyms (E. rudipalpa as a junior synonym of E. tubifex, a cosmopolitan species) by some authors, because both have sessile eyes and two or three antennae. Nonetheless, these two genera are, in fact, distinct. Their type species can clearly be separated using some prostomial features. We provide an emended diagnosis of...

Sister-species of eastern Pacific hydrothermal vent worms (Ampharetidae, Alvinellidae, Vestimentifera) provide new mitochondrial COI clock calibration ArchiMer
Chevaldonne, Pierre; Jollivet, Didier; Desbruyeres, Daniel; Lutz, Richard; Vrijenhoek, Robert.
Introduction : The evolutionary age of some of the hydrothermal vent taxa have recently become a highly debated issue. Vestimentiferan worms (= siboglinid polychaetes) in particular, have been claimed to be as old as 430 million years based on the occurrence of fossilized tubes resembling those of currently known Vestimentifera (Little et al., 1997), while other authors, based on molecular data, have claimed they must be younger than 100 million years old (Black et al, 1997; Halanych et al., 1998). One explanation for this apparent discrepancy might be that tubes, such as those found in the Silurian fossil vent communities, did not belong to vestimentiferans, but rather to other tube-dwelling polychaetes. However, it is also possible that the choice of the...

SPATIAL AND TEMPORAL CHARACTERIZATION OF SOFT BOTTOM POLYCHAETES IN A SHALLOW TROPICAL BAY (COLOMBIAN CARIBBEAN) Boletín de Investigaciones
Guzmán-Alvis,Angela I.; Lattig,Patricia; Ruiz,José A..
The spatial and temporal variations of the polychaete assemblages were studied within and off a shallow (10-25 m) tropical bay (Bahía de Portete). The polychaete abundances at family level and their trophic mechanisms were used for this purpose. Sediment samples were collected at six stations in this bay during the wet and dry seasons. Multivariate analysis indicated that off- Bay polychaete assemblages were different from the bay ones; this spatial variation was related to sedimentary characteristics, depth and turbid-water conditions. On the other hand, these assemblages did not show significant differences between the dry and wet seasons. The differences between these two assemblages were given specially by the Syllidae, Gonidadidae, Nephtyidae,...

Surprisingly diversified macrofauna in mobile gravels and pebbles from high-energy hydrodynamic environment of the ‘Raz Blanchard’ (English Channel) ArchiMer
Foveau, Aurelie; Dauvin, Jean-claude.
Our study concerns the sampling of patches of mobile gravel and pebbles at 14 stations (25 to 66 m water depth) in an area of hard bottom located in the ‘Raz Blanchard’ (between Cap de La Hague in France and Alderney in the Channel Islands, UK). The samples collected from these benthic habitats with scattered fauna were sieved on 1-mm mesh and subjected to meticulous sorting, revealing the presence of a highly diversified mobile fauna. The epifauna and vagile macrofauna (>1 mm) account for 140 taxa (120 species, 17 genera and three other levels of identification). Amphipods and polychaetes dominate the taxonomic richness, while crustaceans represent 75% of the fauna. Among these taxa, two species are new for the English Channel marine fauna. Biological...

The Terebelliformia-Recent Developments and Future Directions ArchiMer
Hutchings, Pat; Carrerette, Orlemir; Nogueira, João M. M.; Hourdez, Stephane; Lavesque, Nicolas.
Terebelliformia comprises a large group of sedentary polychaetes which live from the intertidal to the deep sea. The majority live in tubes and are selective deposit feeders. This study synthesises the current knowledge of this group, including their distribution, in the different biogeographic regions. We highlight the new methodologies being used to describe them and the resolution of species complexes occurring in the group. The main aim of this review is to highlight the knowledge gaps and to stimulate research in those directions, which will allow for knowledge of their distribution and abundances to be used by ecologists and managers.

Сравнение видового состава и количественного развития полихет обрастания и бентоса на примере Одесского порта IBSS Repository
Лосовская, Г. В.; Синегуб, И. А.; Рыбалко, А. А..
